Watchmen movie, slated for release this upcoming 2009, is the much anticipated film adaptation of the highly acclaimed 12-series comic book created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The film is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Jeffery Dean Morgan, Stephen McHattie, Billy Crudup, and Carla Gugino. The complexity of the comic book has finally been brought to the big screen under the production of Warner Brothers. Set in the 80's, the film zoomed in on an alternative version of the United Stated where it is at the brink of waging a nuclear warfare against Soviet Union. In the world of Watchmen, normal human beings dressed up and acted as superheroes to push forth their own cause.
Even before its release, a lot of controversies are already being attached to the film. Apparently, Watchmen movie has been tainted with development mayhem because of conflicts between and among the production companies involved in the project. It was initially a project of 20th Century Fox and Warner Brothers with director Terry Gilliam and producer Joel Silver. However, the deconstructive nature of the comic book was considered by Gilliam impossible to be put on film. When the production was dropped, the project was taken in by original producer, Lawrence Gordon and director, Lloyd Levin together with Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures. David Hayter was chosen to produce the script. Unfortunately, the project was once again ceased due to budget dilemmas. In the end, the project was returned to Warner Brothers with Snyder as director and Paramount as an international distributor. While the production has been finally pushed forth and in fact is just awaiting a movie release, producer Lawrence Gordon is currently facing a lawsuit filed by Fox for not paying for the buy-out for the film.
Director Zack Snyder, fresh from the success of another comic book adaptation, 300, opted to stay true to the graphic novel's plot and setting. Through the genius of scriptwriter, Alex Tse, the comic book series was made to fit the big screen. The intricacy of Watchmen comic book was also compressed into 2 ½ hours due and was kept tightly knitted by both director and scriptwriter without jeopardizing the essence of the movie. To keep the film true to its comic predecessor, Snyder opted to shoot in real locations instead of going for studio sets. The filming took place mostly in Canada and New York.
Comic book enthusiasts are already looking out for the launch of the film. On the other hand, creator, Alan Moore, seems nonchalant about the movie's hype. In one interview, he said that he will not watch his comic to be made into a film. He added that his comic book is meant to be read not watched. Apparently, he was not pleased. Moore said that the adaptation is "sublimely stupid". He wished not to be credited for the film and gave his share to co-creator, Dave Gibbon, the same as what he did for V for Vendetta. Watchmen movie director, Zack Snyder, commented that he totally respect the request and opinions of the comic book creator.
