The Production Struggles of Watchmen Movie

Watchmen movie, slated for release this upcoming 2009, is the much anticipated film adaptation of the highly acclaimed 12-series comic book created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The film is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Jeffery Dean Morgan, Stephen McHattie, Billy Crudup, and Carla Gugino. The complexity of the comic book has finally been brought to the big screen under the production of Warner Brothers. Set in the 80's, the film zoomed in on an alternative version of the United Stated where it is at the brink of waging a nuclear warfare against Soviet Union. In the world of Watchmen, normal human beings dressed up and acted as superheroes to push forth their own cause.

Even before its release, a lot of controversies are already being attached to the film. Apparently, Watchmen movie has been tainted with development mayhem because of conflicts between and among the production companies involved in the project. It was initially a project of 20th Century Fox and Warner Brothers with director Terry Gilliam and producer Joel Silver. However, the deconstructive nature of the comic book was considered by Gilliam impossible to be put on film. When the production was dropped, the project was taken in by original producer, Lawrence Gordon and director, Lloyd Levin together with Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures. David Hayter was chosen to produce the script. Unfortunately, the project was once again ceased due to budget dilemmas. In the end, the project was returned to Warner Brothers with Snyder as director and Paramount as an international distributor. While the production has been finally pushed forth and in fact is just awaiting a movie release, producer Lawrence Gordon is currently facing a lawsuit filed by Fox for not paying for the buy-out for the film.

Director Zack Snyder, fresh from the success of another comic book adaptation, 300, opted to stay true to the graphic novel's plot and setting. Through the genius of scriptwriter, Alex Tse, the comic book series was made to fit the big screen. The intricacy of Watchmen comic book was also compressed into 2 ½ hours due and was kept tightly knitted by both director and scriptwriter without jeopardizing the essence of the movie. To keep the film true to its comic predecessor, Snyder opted to shoot in real locations instead of going for studio sets. The filming took place mostly in Canada and New York.

Comic book enthusiasts are already looking out for the launch of the film. On the other hand, creator, Alan Moore, seems nonchalant about the movie's hype. In one interview, he said that he will not watch his comic to be made into a film. He added that his comic book is meant to be read not watched. Apparently, he was not pleased. Moore said that the adaptation is "sublimely stupid". He wished not to be credited for the film and gave his share to co-creator, Dave Gibbon, the same as what he did for V for Vendetta. Watchmen movie director, Zack Snyder, commented that he totally respect the request and opinions of the comic book creator.

The Watchmen Comic Book Movie Review

If you have been living in a cave or haven't visited the cinema in the last year or so let me introduce you to the Watchmen. The Watchmen is set in an alternative America where costumed superheroes roam freely among us, however this all changes when the government cracks down on the superheroes, who are then looked upon as vigilantes.

After one of the Watchmen known as the comedian is killed the Watchmen reunite to ultimately prevent their own destruction and possibly a nuclear holocaust, however as the plot thickens so does the mystery and betrayal surrounding the Watchmen.

The Watchmen has been called an unfilmable comic book movie adaptation, so Zack Snyder had is work cut out from the very start. Snyder who created the equally as stunning '300' movie doesn't disappoint either. Just like the 300 the Watchmen is visually stunning and the visual effects are equally as impressive. From the get go this movie feels like what I call an event movie, a movie that should only be watched in the cinema because of its epic proportions from visual effects to the impressive musical score. The Watchmen don't fail in any of the above categories through out the whole film.

The cast of the Watchmen are all equally as strong as the next; it seams Snyder as gone for acting talent in this movie rather that just casting Hollywood stars that you may think you would see in a blockbuster movie such as the Watchmen. All the cast do a good job to convince you that what you are seeing on screen is believable and there's no where throughout the movie that had me thinking come on this is to unrealistic even for a comic book movie, and I think that's saying a lot when there is a giant blue man through out the entire piece.

If you're not a fan of comic book movies then that no big deal as the action and particularly the fight scenes in this movie are very impressive indeed and feels like you could be watching the latest installment of a James bond movie, from the hand to hand combat to the destructible sets there's something here for every action fan to keep them happy through the film.

Having said all the above positive points I have to move onto the negative, this movie is around 3 hours long, this in its self isn't a bad thing as if kept interesting like lets say The Dark Knight then there's no problem, however I do feel like some of the scenes in the movie felt like they were there to fill some gaps, like night owl trying and having sex with silver specter twice, however that's only a little problem.

Another gripe I have with this movie is that we have Dr. Manhattan a blue god like person who can pretty much do anything including changing the tone of his skin within a couple of seconds but he must choose to constantly walk around butt naked showing his penis to everyone, this isn't really a problem but it does feel weird that this godlike person can transport himself to mars, crush tanks, change skin color, change into suits within seconds but he can't seam to put a pair of pants on.

People who aren't familiar with the source material may also find the narrative structure confusing, but I'm sure any able minded person will be able to figure out what's going on in this movie, so it should not subtract from the Watchmen experience.

So the question is who watches the Watchmen? I believe you should. I award the Watchmen movie 3/5 stars.

Thanks for reading.

Directing the Watchmen Movie As Faithful As Possible

The trailer of this much-awaited film adaptation of the hit comic book series already has fans waiting with much anticipation. The movie is set in an alternate America in the year 1985, with the only difference is the presence of caped and costumed superheroes. But unlike most stories with superheroes having superhuman powers, only of the characters in the Watchmen movie has obvious superhuman powers: Doctor Manhattan. Most of the characters are just caped vigilantes all with distaste for crime and criminals.

Alan Moore didn't want his story to become a film. In fact when asked about this, he pointed out the incompatibility of these two very different mediums of story-telling. A comic book can be easily flipped to a previous page, to check about past lines and dialogues, giving a chance to the reader to compare lines and analyze plot progression. Watching a film, on the other hand, leaves the viewer not much choice in the dialogues and lines. Once the lines are spoken and you've heard it, that's it. Also, a comic book allows a person to stare at and study a certain scene or examine details for as long as he likes. But in a movie, the moment is gone, with the viewer forced to take in all the detail displayed by a scene. To Moore, the pleasure of reading a comic book is sitting comfortable at a chair, while enjoying a nice cup of coffee. Indeed, the experience of enjoying a comic book contrasts greatly with enjoying a film. Alone and quiet are two best things needed to enjoy a comic series, while movies are better seen with company.

Fortunately, the director chosen to direct the Watchmen movie is Zack Snyder, the director responsible for directing the movie adaptation of 300, which was also based on a comic book. Moore didn't want any involvement in the development and making of this film adaptation of his story, citing examples of movies that were far-off from their comic counterparts. When tasked to direct this, Snyder based his decisions and work on the actual comic book itself. He used this as his storyboard, even claiming that the script is just a guide and that the graphic novel should primarily govern the film-making process. There were instances where Snyder found himself at odds with the production of the movie. They would want the movie not to be so lengthy, but Snyder would not compromise scenes that need to be placed in the movie. Film-wise, some shots can safely be deleted but in order to be as true to the comic book as possible, Zack Snyder felt that they should still be included. In fact, some of the scenes need to be there in order to appreciate the Watchmen.

The director wanted to meet the writer of this story to make the Watchmen movie as true to the comic book as possible. Unfortunately, Moore believes that a comic book story can hardly be told from the medium of cinema. If it weren't for this belief, Moore would have found himself a filmmaker more concerned about the writer's story than his own directing showcasing. All these show that this adaptation would surely be a treat to watch and enjoy, just like your favorite comic book.
