The iPhone Again
Back to my iphone journey.. Here’s some more sharing about my experience with the iphone. Do you get this problem of having server connection problems when you try to download iphone apps from your computer?
After fiddling with windows here and there, I found the answer. (Hey, so you think a lady who knits and does Yoga can’t be equally geeky? Well, you’re wrong baby! ) You just need to turn off your firewall if you want to download Apps but remember to turn it back on again after you’re done because your PC may be at risk of picking up viruses from the net. To turn off that firewall, go to control panel, look under security and click turn on or off firewall. There you go! Another iphone tip for you.

Easy A.
I saw this movie after Narnia. The first part of the story was good but I didn’t like the ending. Olive is this nice girl who goes around helping the looser guys improve their reputation while putting her own at stake. It all began with a lie about why she couldn’t go camping with her best friend’s weird family. She lied about going on a date with a college guy who doesn’t exist. Her friend thought she slept with her imaginary college boyfriend and she had to say yes to shut her up. Unfortunately, s gossiper girl overheard them in the toilet and she spread the news around the school. Then this gay guy asked her for help. If she could pretend that she slept with him, he would be accepted by other guys. Then another fat looser guy approached her for a similar arrangement followed by other losers. More rumors spread and some were so exaggerated. Olive thought she was going to be a hero helping people out. When things got out of control, she went back to them to ask them for their help and nobody cared. They were all concerned about their own reputation. So she decided to come clean by telling the whole world what really happened. Well, it serves all those people right for being so selfish…the story ended with the losers getting what they deserve while she meets a really nice guy who really likes her. Actually I thought a better ending would be for the losers to help her come clean and being honest to the world about how they feel. And maybe their friends would feel sorry and give everyone their dignity better….but then again, this is Hollywood right? They wouldn’t be able to end the story with a good bang. So there you go. What goes around, comes around like a vicious circle.

Another attempt at doing a flat circle
My flat circle didn’t turn out as expected. Check this out. I got an ugly looking doughnut thingy. I will make another attempt to knit another circle tomorrow. Should I start from the center and work my way around? Or should I just draw the circle on a graph paper and knit from left to right? I found another pattern used for the base of a knitted teapot…I might use that too. I hope it turns out as a circle and not something weird. Who knows, the project might turn out as a spaceship or something….

Narnia – The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. Both Edmund and Lucy have grown quite a bit. Boy do they look different! Both Peter and Susan will only make a minor appearance in the movie. They are now too old to go back to Narnia. Prince Caspian, or rather King Caspian is back again in this story. What a handsome dude. Nice hair too. Edmund is looking cute too. The story has its magic and the usual good versus evil routine. Aslan only appears near the end of the story to save the day as usual. Overall, its really a good movie. This will also be Lucy and Edmund’s last trip to Narnia because they would be grown up by the next book. So sad. Why do they have such rules? Will they be mentioned in the next story? I wonder if the writers will do a Narnia 4. Will there be a new kid in the story this round or just King Caspian? Hmmm…. You should watch the movie and enjoy the magical journey. High recommended!

The Second Sock Project
Back to the sock project that I’ve been doing at home. After the first sock that I made (refer to the old blog on my disaster sock). I’ve been paying close attention to which side is the wrong side and the right side of the project. After knitting the cuff of the sock and working on the heel, I realized I did it again. The right side was facing the wrong way! I This time round, I undid the whole thing because I had a headache unknitting the stitches on the heel. So that you go, I’m at point zero again. I’ve made a mental note of which direction I should go when I get to the heel section. I hope my next attempt will be better. Wish me luck….

Knitting a flat circle part 3.
Oh dear. As I knitted further, the true shape of the project started to form. I’ve good news and bad news. First the bad news. It turns out that this wasn’t the sort of circle I was expecting. I had intended to knit a complete circle and not a doughnut shaped circle. And now for the good news. It does look like a circle at least. Hahaha. Well since I’m half way into this project, I guess I’ll have to complete the doughnut. My ball of wool is slowly getting used up too….For my next attempt to knit a circle, I will fall back on the graph paper method.

Knitting a flat circle Part 2.
I’ve decided to undo that piece that I did yesterday and study the pattern again. Now I understand why that piece didn’t look anything like a circle. In fact it looked more like a triangle or a wedge. The idea is to knit a fraction of the circle portion by portion. Each portion is shaped like a piece of pie or pizza (yummy!). I’ve just done about 2 triangles so far and what you see here is almost one quarter of a pie. If I can knit another 2 more triangles, I’ll get half a circle. Isn’t that great? Let’s see how my progress goes.

Setting up the network configurations to download data and some iPhone blues.
Ok, here’s my next sharing about the iphone. Configuring the phone so that it can surf the internet.. I had spent quite a few hours trying to get it to have data access for quite a while and then I surrendered and called my mobile operator. Why didn’t I think of that in the first place? Only the mobile operator will be able to give me the name of the APN for their network. After all, they should know best.
To change the required setting, you’ll have to go to settings, general, network, cellular data network and then key in the name of the APN as given by the mobile operator. Yep, it’s that simple but not so simple if you’re new to the iphone like me. Baah!
Next…here comes the mother of all shocks Data charges can be very expensive and it can wipe out the value of your prepaid SIM if you’re not careful how you use it. Actually…that’s exactly what happened to me. :-o I had downloaded about 2 Apps and the third one was in process when it sort of froze. I wondered why but I thought it was just the network. So I checked the value and gasp. Yep, my SIM card value was reduced to zero. I had activated a prepaid plan of $1 for 10MB but…for that sort of bundle, never use it to download apps. When the 10MB is up, it would simply charge $0.27 per KB after that and so .just to download 40KB, it cost me $10.80. I learnt through the hard way and you as my faithful reader have the privilege to hear it from me to avoid the mistake. For heavier downloads, they have the $7 for 1 GB plan. That would have been more economical…but just to be safe, remember to switch off the cellular data when you’re not using it. You can also choose to download your mails on the go manually instead of the push mail feature to minimize data usage. If possible, read your mails at home. Reserve data charges if you’re expecting an urgent email.
As for the Apps, I’ve yet to explore further because its best to use your home internet plan to download the apps and sync with the iphone. If there is an option to switch off data downloading when you’re not using the apps, I would go for it. I’ll blog more about this when I figure this out.
One great thing about living on our tiny island is that currently we have free wireless internet access at selected areas such as shopping malls, libraries, cafes like Delifrance and some public places that have hotspots. Take advantage of this free internet access by switching on the WIFI function on the iphone whenever you can. This can save on data charges for sure particularly Prepaid SIM card users…..I’ve yet to explore more. Till my next blog session.

Getting the iphone to work when you first buy it.
Recently I joined the bandwagon and bought an iphone from the Apple Store. I was so excited about it that I had it delivered to me at my workplace. Yeah, I couldn’t wait. I had to resist the temptation to set it up at work but I controlled and patiently waited till I got home.
Then came the headache. I had a hard time setting it up to get it to work properly. To make matters worse, there were no detailed instructions on what to do from the moment you put in the SIM card. It took me a long time to figure out what to do but I made it. I thought it would be a good idea to share this knowledge with my readers out there. Maybe there are people out there who are facing the same problems too.
When I had first put in the SIM card, the screen simply said that there is is no service found and to please insert a valid SIM card. (oh dear, I can’t remember the exact message but you get the picture.) You can imagine how I panicked when I got that message. After spending 700 bucks on a phone , it couldn’t read my SIM card so I was upset. Fortunately I surfed and googled and learnt that….after putting in the SIM card, you have first have to connect the phone to your PC and download the iTunes software. You see, itunes must first recognize your phone before you can slide the virtual bar below to view the screen with the many icons. And the minimum itunes version for the iPhone 3GS is V9.2. I downloaded version 10.2 which is the latest at the moment and voila! It finally worked!! I can now make calls and send sms-es from it. By the way, I’m still using a 2G SIM card and yes, 2G SIM cards do work on 3G phones. You’ll hear more of my experiences if I have any more of it to share later.

The knit progress
I’ve been making slower progress with my knitting projects lately. I have not been bringing any projects to work to knit ever since I finished that tissue cover. As for the trainee sock project, I’ve just started the first few rows of rib stitches at the cuff of the sock. I’ve been very tired and distracted lately. Plus I’ve also been in the holiday mood with Christmas around the corner….

Learning Japanese with SEM3 Part 1
And now I will attempt to memorize 100 basic Japanese words using Tony Buzan’s SEM3 from Master Your Memory. I must admit I didn’t have much fun with the Russian words in the last four weeks. I think the Japanese language should be more interesting as we do have Japan Hour and on TV regularly and the sounds of the words are more familiar. Using the SEM3, I will attempt to link the image of the peg word, the English Word and the Japenese Word plus the action for the SEM3. The words in 5400 zone are to be associated with the action “Rubbing” and my character will be a Japanese Sumo Wrestler.
5001 – tie, An,a, Hitotsu no – Sumo Wrestler is rubbing his tie. On his tie, there is a big “A”. He is wearing that tie because “he told you so,” said his friend. (Hitostsu no)

Well, this is a possible agenda for this blog site…and…recently I’ve been interested in learning something about herbs and spices too. How about blogging about herbs and spices or something like how to save money?..... I need to do some research and write my piece first before this can materialize. Yep, lots of hard work is required….look out for it. In the near future. I’ll take this as a learning journey. That’s what this blog Fragments is all about. My journey to make the most out of life and to say that I’ve been there and done that. Cheers!

My knitted sock.
Sadly, my knitted sock project didn’t turn out quite as expected. Although it does look like a sock (haha! What a consolation!), I got all the stitches wrong. What you see here is the result from a trainee pattern that I took off the net.
My first mistake started at the point where I had to divide the stitches between the heel and the instep. When I had to knit it as a flap piece, I had forgotten that the stockinette stitch has to be knitted differently from the way it is supposed to be knitted in the round.
The second mistake was something I couldn’t quite figure out. The instructions on the trainee sock pattern weren’t that clear. The rest of the sock at the point after the gusset suddenly has the wrong side facing outwards. Maybe it could be due to the number of rows at the gusset area? Or I had knitted in the wrong direction when I got back into the round again? I really don’t know.
The only good thing about having the pattern inside out is that I’m able to see the different sections of the sock clearly so my disaster project didn’t turn out to be that hopeless after all. I’m going to work on the second sock paying more attention to the stitches. I hope the second one turns out ok.

V Season 1, Episode 12
Last night I watched the season finale of V. As expected, the show ended with a cliffhanger. I know there’ll be a season 2. Valerie will finally give birth to her alien baby after she is captured by a V soldier. And Anna will kill Valerie after the child is born. Anna has Ryan under her thumb. She has plans for him. I wonder if Ryan will get brain washed by her to become a bad person in the fifth column. Erika uses her dinner opportunity with Anna to get into the ship to kill Anna’s soldier eggs. Lisa makes the decision to help the fifth column because she cares of Tyler who is human. Father Jack delivers a sermon in church that his senior priest is not happy with. He wants the people not to worship the Vs but only God. Anna is enraged that all her eggs are destroyed. Only 12 of the eggs survived. She pushes some button and the sky is filled with a lot of alien ships. The whole sky is red. Are they going to attack earth? What will Anna do? Will Ryan get brain washed? Will Jack leave the church? What’s next for Erica? We’ll have to wait for season 2. Sigh….

The Lost Symbol Part 12
Great. The climax of the story is finally over. There were so many surprises and twists in the story. The real identity of Mal’Ahk was a surprise. That’s a good one there. I finally figured out what was on Sato’s laptop that made Bellamy cooperate with her willingly. Now at least I know Sato is not on the bad guy’s team and why she was so interested in the pyramid herself. It was also partly due to some luck that saved the good characters from dying. Imagine if the CIA didn’t get there on time. Imagine if the bad guy’s trash didn’t have what the CIA needed to destroy Mal’Ahk’s laptop. Imagine if the one of the CIA didn’t see the wheelchair markings that led to the secret basement behind the painting. Everything would have been doomed! I’m now left with the final few chapters. Peter was about to explain to Robert something but I had to put the book down because it was already late at night. I might be able to finish the book this weekend. Till then, this is Fluffy signing off.

The Lost Symbol Part 11.
I stayed up late to read a few chapters till midnight and the story is still at its climax. I learnt something about total liquid ventilation tanks and sensory deprivation tanks. I knew they couldn’t kill the main character but for a couple of chapters I was actually led to believe that he had drowned and his spirit had floated away! The CIA has finally gotten to Robert and Katherine to rescue them… and now they have to race against time to rescue Peter Soleman. Will they get to him on time? That’s where I stopped. Another cliffhanger. Yeah…
I looked up the net on the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobels of The Mystic Shrine. Interesting. They even have a children’s hospital too. Through this book, I learnt so many new things. I wonder if there are similar organizations in other parts of the world. What about my own country? Hmmmm….

Learn Russian with SEM 3 Part 18
And now, it’s time for another 5 Russian words using the SEM3 method from Tony Buzan’s Master Your Memory
5396 - Russian girl is mingling at the beach with other wives. (Why) She has a dog called Poochie-moochie. (Pochemu)
5397- Russian girl is mingling at the book club WITH some asses. (S)
5398- Russian girl is mingling at the beefcakes club and she is shouting Yes Darling! (Da)
5399- Russian girl is mingling with some babes like YOU and vooee (Vyi)
5400- Russian girl is mingling with a group of PHD students who are writing their own thesis. She takes a vase and hands it to a mama. “Your Vash”. Your – Vash.
Ok, I’ve finished the 100 Russian Basic words. I didn’t really enjoy doing this because I’m not familiar with the pronunciation at all. Seriously, in order to remember something better, we need to do a lot of repetition and most of all, there must be an interest in learning. That’s what I figured out during this month. Next week, I will attempt to learn 100 basic Japanese words. I hope that I would be able to do better the next round because I’m at least familiar with some Japanese words…
